Jalisco, History of

by Don Mabry

Conquered by Nuño de Guzmán, President of the Audiencia  of México, in 1529 with 10,500 soldiers of whom 500 were Spanish. It took years for Guzmán to conquer this region and the Spanish did not gain control of Nayarit until the middle of the 18th century. Jalisco became part of Nueva Galicia and was governed by the Audiencia in Guadalajara. Jalisco consisted of the present state of that name and the territory of Tepic and part of the states of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. It was always a rival to Mexico City. In the 19th century, the central government lopped off parts of the state to reduce its power. Finally, in December, 1884, the territory of Nayarit was created.
