"The goals of this discussion list are multiple. Firstly, building on the work done by various associations and programs since the 1960s, one of the objectives of this list is to overcome the linguistic, political, and geographic fragmentation that has traditionally characterized the field and region. Secondly, this list will provide access to debates and discussions on Caribbean studies and act as a resource to academics teaching and researching in associated fields. Scholars from other traditionally defined fields are now looking to the Caribbean as they teach courses on slavery, colonization, and world history. Thus, it is anticipated that this list will have a broad appeal and will be of interest to academics specializing in different but albeit connected fields of study. Thirdly, this list will serve to reinforce the growing awareness of the region as an important and rich area for further research and study. In keeping with current historiographical trends, it is intended that this list will help to move the study of the Caribbean beyond a regional analytical framework and will locate the region within the broader context of modern world history. Finally, this list will provide a meeting place for academics from a number of disciplines thereby facilitating interdisciplinary discussions between academics worldwide."

Historians, literary critics, anthropologists and art critics from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the US and Europe have collaborated in this unique text-image show of the national iconographies of three Latin American countries in the final decades of the nineteenth century - a moment of accelerating modernization and the emergence of new, centralized and disciplinary, state formations.
  • Relics and Selves: Iconographies of the National in Argentina, Brazil and Chile, 1880-1890(507 clicks)
"In Argentina, Brazil and Chile the decade of the 1880s coincides with a new culturally-based discourse on the nation and nationalism. Institutions of cultural nationalism, which were created and strengthened in this period, fostered, reproduced and displayed the power of the nation through symbolic means. Museums, geographic societies, border commissions and international exhibitions all helped to define what and who composed the nation. This project investigates how institutions of cultural nationalism formed and fostered the creation of a new national consciousness in this period. An important component of this project are the iconographic sources, which range from paintings to ethnographic materials and border surveys. These images aided the institutionalization of the nation by giving citizens a shared iconology and by naturalizing the existence of each country."

  • The Shatterbelts of the Americas(467 clicks)
The intent of this article is first to define the general shatterbelt dimensions, second to review the four Latin American shatterbelts, third to examine the seven North American shatterbelts, and finally to explore briefly the significance of shatterbelts to American diplomacy and to international relations. "Shatterbelts" (the term defies translation into Spanish) are geographic regions (Kelly 1986b: 173): "over whose control great powers seriously compete. Great powers compete because they perceive a strong interest for doing so and because opportunities are present for gaining alliance footholds with states of the region. Consequently, a high potential exists for escalation of war among major powers. A shatterbelt originates when rival major power footholds are established in an area."
