Title Page || 1: Bolívar in México

This volume is a compilation of chronicles about the battles and incidents in the epic struggle for the Independence of the Spanish Colonies in South America, which was achieved through the superb leadership of the Liberator Simón Bolívar. The original text, which was three to four times longer, has been condensed to the present size for two important reasons:

(1) Our chief aim in publishing this work is to place before scholars, in simple and concise form, the heroic deeds of Simón Bolívar and his Generals. By issuing it in abridged form, and thus reducing the costs of printing and distribution, we will reach a much larger number of readers at less expense; and,

(2) Shortening these chronicles has enabled us to publish them in magazines and historical bulletins.

As in the case of all our previous works, this edition will be distributed gratis to universities, colleges and other centers of learning, as well as to students of American History in the United States. This publication has been made possible through the generosity of the following:

Allied Bank International
Exxon Corporation
Franklin National Bank
W.R. Grace & Co.
ITT World Communications Inc.
Patrick H. O'Neill

Our indebtedness to them is indeed great, and we wish to take this opportunity of expressing our deep appreciation. Our heartfelt gratitude goes also to Dr. Luis Villalba-Villalba, the distinguished lawyer, scholar and historian, the President of the Bolivarian Society of Venezuela, for honoring these pages with an introduction.
