Chile: A Brief Naval History

by
Carlos López Urrutia

Chile is an ocean-land. That is to say, it is country which, because of its structure and its geographic position, has no other goal, no better resources, no better destiny-better yet-no other salvation, than the sea. She was born from the sea; the sea fed her original inhabitants; through the sea her Conquest was consolidated; over the sea her Independence was secured; from the sea, it must extract her daily food; without the sea, the country makes no sense.
